It was eight o’clock. The sun had set, and streetlights lit the evening sky. Leaving the closing shopping center, I followed the rest of my family back to our car and hopped in the backseat with my brother. My sister plopped in behind the wheel and started the car. A series of hilly roads led the way back to our house. Slouching in the backseat, I stared out the window.
Gradually, a cloud of fog descended and blurred the windshield. Bright streetlights and blazing headlights from oncoming vehicles almost totally obscured our view. My sister became more and more cautious as the fog refused to disappear. Even the car’s internal defroster didn’t help. It wasn’t until my sister turned on the windshield wipers that the fog began to clear.
This reminded me of the Spiritual “fog” we, as Christians, often face. When life is going well, it’s easy for our minds to focus more on the physical—the temporary things that will eventually pass away—than the Eternal. We often lose sight of what’s ahead—the eternal things of God, building our personal walk with our Savior. Instead of keeping our eyes clear and fixed on God, it’s easy to let worldly things blur our vision. If our “windshield” (our eyes, thoughts, mind, and desires) is blurred by Spiritual fog, we lose sight of the “road” (our life, decisions, goals) ahead. This will make the turns that God has for us ahead to become unclear and abrupt. But when we are constantly and daily in God’s Word and seeking His advice, the Bible acts as “windshield wipers” that can clear away such Spiritual fog.
None of us are perfect. We all fall prey to focusing on NOW instead of the eternal. I especially am prone to such Spiritual fog. But we must let God’s Word continually work in our lives, showing us where we have foggy windshields and clearing our Spiritual vision, that we might set our eyes on Him.
